Gas Technology Institute (GTI), the nation's leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a motivated person at the Principal or Senior Scientist level to lead GTI's microbiology sciences group. This position will provide microbiology support to on-going research programs at GTI. • Performs and supervises culture- and molecular-based methods to enumerate microorganisms in complex environmental samples - focus on microbes implicit in pipeline corrosion (MIC) following standard industry practices.
• Expand the microbiology program in areas such as anaerobic digestion, bioengineering to produce value added fuels/chemicals and biocatalyst optimizations.
• Conceives, plans and conducts research in problem areas with considerable scope and complexity
• Applies in-depth knowledge to problems that require unconventional or novel approaches and may require sophisticated research techniques
• Authors technical papers and proposals
• Assesses feasibility and soundness of experimental approaches, techniques, or equipment
• Identifies new technical and/or business areas of activity that attracts significant work to the company; prepares research proposals
• If applicable, manages direct reports including hiring, appraising, disciplining and assigning work
• Attends safety training, safety meetings and applies safety standards
• Actively participates in professional organizations and is recognized as an expert
• Other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities : will manage scientist(s) within the Chemical Research group. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Exceptional microbiology laboratory skillset - includes hands-on experience with molecular methods such as qPCR and PCR methodologies.
  • Strong experimental and analytical skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written/verbal) with internal and external personnel
  • Ability to plan experiments and analyze / present data clearly
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a cross-functional format
  • Motivated to learn new techniques and propose projects
  • Adaptive and flexible to succeed in a changing environment Education and Experience
    • B.S. with 10+ years' experience; M.S with 5-7 years of academic or industrial lab experience
    • Basic fermentation / anaerobic digestion experience
