Job Description:

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

The Center for Promoting STEM seeks to encourage students of diverse backgrounds to pursue a major and/or career in STEM, reduce equity gap of student success in STEM courses, strengthen an existing supportive and rewarding learning environment for students and faculty, contribute to the literature on teaching and learning, and distribute the successful results of the Center's activities.

The Coordinator of the Center for Promoting STEM is responsible for and serves as the primary contact for the Center for Promoting STEM. Use independent judgment in functional decisions based on the College's policies and practices. Under general supervision of the Grants Manager: STEAM-Health Career and Special Projects.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Manage the Center for Promoting STEM.
  • Arrange and facilitate the STEM Speaker Series.
  • Collaborate with the advisory committee of the Center for Promoting STEM to shape and implement the vision, mission, and goals to encourage students, especially those underrepresented in STEM, to explore STEM fields and to pursue STEM degrees/careers.
  • Identify the needs of STEM students and STEM departments. Create STEM faculty professional development opportunities particularly to address systemic barriers to student success.
  • Recruit and coordinate faculty mentors in the STEM200 independent study project courses.
  • Construct the programmatic aspects of STEAM-H grant funded projects.
  • Create, maintain, and process student caseloads.

    Community Engagement and Relationship Building

    • Represent the College involving the Center for Promoting STEM programs and serve as the primary Center for Promoting STEM contact.
    • Plan and organize Center for Promoting STEM activities for Oakton students including STEM Speaker Series and Skyway STEM Poster Competition.
    • Work with various Oakton entities including Honors Program, TRiO, STEM departments, Advising & Counseling Services personnel, Office of Student Life, counselors, faculty, etc. to identify barriers to completing STEM major and to encourage and facilitate students' pursuit in STEM major.
    • Plan and organize with internal and external entities the activities promoting STEM for K-12 including Futures Unlimited, Girls Who Code, AMC math competitions, Illinois Science Olympiad, You Be the Chemist, and MathCounts.
    • Plan and organize activities promoting STEM for transfer including Indiana Chicago-Metro Regional Math Alliance.

      Subject Matter Expertise

      • Provide STEM professional development centered on racial equity with an intersectional lens.
      • Oversee STEM200 courses including the Oakton NASA Robotics Team. Identify and collaborate with STEM department chairs to hire faculty to teach STEM200. Collaborate with STEM department chairs and/or write Educational Foundation grants to fund materials for STEM200.
      • Advance the infusion of projects and problem-based learning in STEM.
      • Advise STEM student organizations.



        Communications

        • Develop and produce promotional publications and Center for Promoting STEM communication materials.
        • Maintain, develop and organize information for the program and departmental web pages including the design, preparation and editing of new information.
        • Create and maintain Oakton STEM alumni database.
        • Research, analyze, and identify funding opportunities in support of the program.
        • Prepare, assist, and evaluate grant proposals, reports, project evaluations, and research related to STEM.
        • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.




          Requirements:

          Qualifications and Working Conditions:

          • Master's degree in a STEM field and/or in education or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
          • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience is required.
          • Ability to collaborate with a variety of different people and roles.
          • Passion for interdisciplinary work.
          • Ability to work through conflict honestly and openly.
          • Orientation toward creativity and innovation.
          • A deep working knowledge of systemic inequities and/or social change practices.
          • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of audiences, are required.
          • Ability to enter, maintain, and manipulate data on a personal computer is required. Comfortable using and learning new technologies including Google Drive, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
          • Understanding of STEM teaching and education trends. Willing to learn STEM concepts.
          • Detailed oriented, flexible, and have ability to manage multiple priorities.
          • Experience with grant writing and implementation is a plus.

            Physical Demands:

            Light lifting up to 10 lbs. and light carrying up to 10 lbs. Ability to reach above shoulder. Periods of time spent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending and stooping. Mobility to move from building to building on-Campus and to visit off-Campus entities. Work is performed in a general office environment and is sedentary in nature. Little or no exposure to adverse working

            Supervision Received:

            Administrative and functional supervision is received from the Grants Manager: STEAM-H and Special Projects.

            Supervision Exercised:

            Functional supervision may be exercised over a student employee, division staff, and tutors.

            HOURS: Monday - Friday 8:15 am - 5:00 pm

            SALARY: $54,712

            Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have hybrid schedule options available after 30 working days.
