Jen School provides specialized academic and vocational opportunities for young men experiencing academic, emotional, behavioral or cognitive challenges that can potentially limit their life success. Students are served in uniquely designed classrooms to maximize effectiveness across the continuum of age and disability type.
About the Special Education Teacher Position
Lead classroom instruction in a Special Education classroom. Responsible for the supervision and coordination at classroom environment (i.e. students and instructional assistants). Develops and actualizes school curriculum within self-contained classroom environment and is responsible for delivery instruction at various levels within classroom so to ensure every students opportunity to be academically and vocationally successful.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Establishes collaborative relationships with colleagues, consultants, therapists, and administrators;
  • Maintains the required educational certifications and training required of all
  • Maryville Academy employees as well as those professional certifications and endorsements required by ISBE;
  • Keeps informed, and actively seeks training in current developments, trends, and instructional best practices which pertain to the overall success of the student by maximizing his individual skills and talents;
  • Attends scheduled team meetings and participates in discussions in a proactive, professional, and solution focused manner;
  • Recognizes and proactively reacts to conditions which, potentially, may alter the effectiveness of the whole program and/or their specific job responsibilities;
  • Gathers information from other faculty and completes individual tasks/assignments prior to staffing and/or completion date;
  • Communicates with parents/guardians and external consumers in a positive and supportive manner;
  • Participates and contributes to in-service trainings and staff development opportunities and providing input and suggestions for future topics and directions;
  • Contributes to a school environment which encourages students to be responsible, independent, and confident;
  • Interacts with students in a supportive, professional manner maintaining self-control when reacting to threatening or aggressive behavior of students;
  • Follows through on all behavior programs developed in conjunction with therapists, and other educational and therapeutic personnel at team meetings or IEP conferences;
  • Documents all progress and completion of student work in a timely manner. Completes grade reports and progress updates at designated times or when requested to do so by administrative team members;
  • Develop new courses of instruction with accompanying IEPs to meet the changing needs of the students. Evaluates curriculum needs and requests necessary materials;
  • Understands and adheres to policies involving reporting of suspected and known abuse of students, and maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding all information about students;
  • Keeps materials and assigned space in a neat and orderly condition;
  • Participates in continued performance quality improvement;
  • Other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

    • A Bachelor's Degree, Masters Degree preferred, in Education (Special Education) from an accredited college or university;
    • Illinois Professional Educator License with Learning Behavioral Specialist (LBSl) endorsement.
    • A minimum of 1-2 years experience teaching, with experience in special education, crisis invention and alternative school settings preferred; must have instructional and assessment skills, with majority of experience focused on the special education population preferred.

      SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE

      • Must possess a valid Illinois drivers license;
      • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with Jen School students, supervisors, coworkers, subordinates, support agencies, and a variety of internal as well as external consumers;
      • Basic computer proficiency including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of programs (ex: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Microsoft Outlook, Embrace IEP, Blackbaud LMS, Google GSuite, Microsoft Teams, Impero, and Adobe
      • Adheres to the policies and procedures of Maryville Jen School;
      • Knowledge of Individualized Education Plan (IEP) eligibility, planning, and instruction;
      • Knowledge of service delivery options and documentation of service delivery;
      • Knowledge of crisis intervention procedures;
      • Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines;
      • Skill in telephone etiquette.

        PHYSICAL DEMANDS

        • Required to frequently sit, stand, bend, stoop, walk and drive for extended periods; able to walk up and down stairs;
        • Required to occasionally lift/move objects and/or youth weighing in excess of 40 pounds;
        • Must possess the ability to provide physical restraint for students threatening to harm themselves or others;
        • Must have the visual, hearing, and learning capabilities sufficient to perform the essential functions defined above;
        • Must participate in physical education activities with the students and, if necessary physically interact (intervene) with students.
        • Position requires frequent to continuous work on a computer which requires employee to possess the manual dexterity to operate equipment.

          ENVIRONMENT & SCHEDULING

          • Work is performed during school and vocational program days and hours;
          • Work may be performed off-site during required remote learning days or in situations when in person learning is deemed unsafe;
          • Work is performed in and in association with the Maryville Jen School, hospital, and residential programs/settings as well as in an administrative office setting;
          • Duties involve contact with students who may be verbally and physically threatening, aggressive, suicidal and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
